The city of Alta Floresta emerged in the early '70s with the growth of the exploitation of rubber and is situated in the extreme north of Mato Grosso, 873 km north from the capital Cuiabá and on the southern edge of the untouched Amazon rainforest.
The area is considered one of the best in Brazil to watch birds, incl. the harpy eagle, and rare mammals such as tapirs, giant otters, sloths and six species of monkeys.
Alta Floresta is the end of the road: beyond it to the north is the immensity of the jungle.
